Scalp Micropigmentation Pre & After Care Guide

Scalp Micropigmentation Pre-Care

To achieve the best results from your scalp micropigmentation (SMP) treatment and to ensure a smooth procedure, it is important to follow these pre-care guidelines:

  • Wash Your Scalp: Make sure to wash your scalp thoroughly the night before and the morning of your appointment. Use a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo to ensure your scalp is clean and free from oils, dirt, and products.
  • Avoid Haircuts: Do not shave or cut your hair within 48 hours of your SMP treatment unless instructed otherwise by your practitioner. If a specific hair length is needed, your technician will advise on when and how to trim it.
  • No Hair Products: On the day of your appointment, avoid using any styling products such as gels, waxes, or sprays on your scalp. Your scalp must be completely clean and free from any product build-up for optimal pigment retention.
  • Avoid Blood Thinners: For at least 48 hours before your treatment, avoid consuming alcohol, caffeine, aspirin, ibuprofen, or any blood-thinning medication (unless prescribed by a doctor). These can thin your blood and increase the likelihood of bleeding during the procedure, which may affect the pigment’s ability to settle properly.
  • Sun Exposure: Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or tanning beds for at least two week before your treatment. A sunburnt or overly tanned scalp can affect the results of your scalp micropigmentation and may cause discomfort during the procedure.
  • Stay Hydrated: Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment. Hydrated skin responds better to pigmentation, and this will aid the healing process.
  • Consult Your Practitioner: If you have any scalp conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, or active acne, consult your practitioner beforehand. They may recommend rescheduling the treatment until your scalp has healed, to avoid irritation or poor pigment retention.
  • Medication: Inform your practitioner if you are on any prescribed medication or have any medical conditions that may affect the procedure. This will allow them to take any necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
  • Eat Before Your Appointment: SMP treatments can take several hours, depending on the size of the area being treated. Make sure to have a light meal beforehand to keep your energy levels steady throughout the session.
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear comfortable clothing and preferably a button-up or zip-up top. This will prevent you from having to pull clothing over your head after the treatment, which could disturb the freshly applied pigment.

By following these simple pre-care guidelines, you’ll help ensure your scalp micropigmentation procedure goes smoothly and leads to the best possible results

Scalp Micropigmentation After-Care

To ensure optimal healing and longevity of your scalp micropigmentation results, please follow these aftercare guidelines carefully:

Avoid Wetting: Do not wet the treated area for 3 days post-treatment to allow the skin to seal in the pigment and prevent dilution.

Sun Protection: Minimise UV exposure to prevent fading. Wear a hat in strong sunlight and apply a high-SPF sunscreen to protect and enhance treated skin.

Additional Tips for Fast Healing:

  • Use a fresh pillowcase.
  • Allow scabbing or dry skin to naturally exfoliate; avoid picking, which can lead to scarring and patchy results.
  • Refrain from hot, sweaty exercise for 1 week.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for 4 weeks.
  • Avoid heavy sweating and long hot showers for the first 10 days.
  • Do not swim or use chlorinated hot tubs for the first 10 days.
  • Avoid topical makeup, on the treated area until fully healed.
  • Do not rub, pick, or scratch the treated area.

Showering Guidelines:

Limit showers to 5 minutes. Keep your face out of the water while washing your body, and only wet your face at the end of your shower. Avoid excessive rinsing and hot water on the treated area.

Once fully healed, your scalp micropigmentation should last approximately 3_5 years, depending on your skin type and lifestyle. The follow-up appointment should be scheduled 4 to 6 weeks after the initial treatment.

Please note: You will be unable to donate blood for up to 12 months following your micropigmentation procedure.
